Why is a lifecycle flow useful?

A real customer lifecycle is not a funnel. Customers recover, lapse again, upgrade after downgrading, and come back after churning. Only a diagram that permits cycles can represent that, and the size of the loops is exactly what retention work changes.

How to read it

Compare each pair of opposing arrows. A state whose inbound is heavier than its outbound is filling up, and states fill up long before the consequence appears in a churn number.

Limitations to keep in mind

Transition counts depend entirely on the window you measure them over. A monthly view and a quarterly view of the same population produce different arrows, because customers that bounced twice inside a month are invisible at monthly resolution.
